Q:

I have a resident that was admitted Medicare part A on the 11th, discharged to the hospital on 13th and is returning today (22nd). Is her admission MDS due earlier because of the 04/11 admission date?

A:

The admission assessment should be reinitiated with a new ARD and scheduled within 14 days after re-entry from the hospital. Any portion of the resident’s admission assessment that was previously completed should be stored on the resident’s record with a notation that the assessment was reinitiated because the resident was hospitalized. Additionally, you will need to complete a new PPS 5-Day assessment for Medicare reimbursement. These assessments can be combined but if so, must have an ARD scheduled on a day between days 1 – 8 of the Medicare stay to comply with the PPS 5-Day scheduling requirements.
