Q:

Can I code fluids received in the hospital in section K for a diagnosis of Hypovolemia?

A:

Fluids coded in K0520A1 do have to be for nutrition or hydration. Oftentimes we may not see that specific verbiage in the hospital notes. In cases where the diagnosis indicated the fluids were for hydration, it is a good practice to have a progress noted from your physician, nurse practitioner, and/or dietician that links the treatment to the diagnosis.
