Q:
I have heard that IV fluids received in the hospital can be reported on the MDS if administered within the look-back period. Where is this information coded?
A:
IV fluids are reported at item K0510 – Parenteral/IV feeding. Fluids received during a hospital stay would be indicated in column 1. While NOT a Resident. Keep in mind that before coding this item there must be supporting documentation that reflects the need for additional fluid intake specifically addressing a nutrition or hydration need. Please refer to RAI pg. K-12 for further information on what types of fluids may be coded here.
