Mandatory update to SNF ABN (CMS-10055) – 10/31/2024
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released an update to the Skilled Nursing Facility Advance Beneficiary Notice of Non-coverage (SNF ABN)—Form CMS-10055 in August. The revised form and updated instructions are available for immediate use and will become mandatory on 10/31/2024.
The SNF ABN (CMS-10055) provides information to beneficiaries so that they can decide if they wish to continue receiving the skilled services that may not be paid for by Medicare and assume financial responsibility. The form is required when:
- Resident has skilled benefit days remaining and is being discharged from Part A services and will continue living in the facility.
- Beneficiary has 3-day hospital stay, but does not require daily skilled care
In the past, we have seen minor changes; however, this most recent form update includes several changes to the form layout and content.
OLD Form NEW Form
SNFs should immediately implement use of the new form with updated instructions.
Note that skilled nursing facilities should use Form CMS-10055 for Part A services only and should access Form CMS-R-131 here for Part B services.
