Q:

To ensure resident safety with beds and bedrails, how often should bed inspections be conducted and what should be checked?

A:

As part of the preventive maintenance program, bed inspections should be conducted a minimum of every six months, and this should include the bed frames, mattresses, and rails. The bed inspection should include an evaluation of potential entrapment risks as defined in the FDAs Potential Zones of Entrapment with the link here to the guidance. The bed inspection should also ensure that the bed’s dimensions are appropriate for the resident’s size and weight.
