Q:

Do beneficiary notices have to be issued for Medicare Advantage patients?

A:

The NOMNC is required to be issued to both Medicare Beneficiaries and Medicare Advantage Plan members.  The SNF ABN is only required to be issued to Traditional Medicare beneficiaries and not Medicare Advantage Plan members.

The SNF ABN is issued to Medicare beneficiaries who are remaining in the SNF with benefit days remaining, but are receiving non covered services at the end of their Medicare covered stay to inform them of their right to request a demand bill to Medicare.  This right to request a demand bill to Medicare does not apply to Medicare advantage members.

Medicare Advantage plan members should be informed of the change in payer and their financial responsibility should they chose to remain in the facility, and this is often done through a voluntary notice process.

I hope this helps to clarify.
