Q:

Under PDPM, can you count IV fluids given in the hospital?

A:

Yes, any and all nutrition and hydration received in the last 7 days given at the hospital as an outpatient or an inpatient, provided they were administered for nutrition or hydration, can be coded in Section K0510A1. Be aware of the specific IV fluids in the RAI manual that are not included i.e. IV fluids administered routinely during an operative procedure. I recommend reviewing hospital documentation including the MAR prior to establishing the ARD for the 5-day assessment, so that all resident complexities are included. IV fluids coded in section K0510A1 or K0510A2 are conditions that meet the special care high nursing component.
