Psychotropic medications include any drug that affects brain activities associated with mental processes and behaviors. The use of psychotropic medications in LTC have implications on resident quality of life and survey regulatory outcomes. This session provides an overview of classifications of psychotropic medications commonly prescribed in LTC and strategies to monitor their appropriate use to improve quality and maintain regulatory compliance. The course emphasizes the importance of an interdisciplinary, holistic approach to develop processes for monitoring the use of psychotropic medications, promoting gradual dose reductions, and preventing the inappropriate use of psychotropic medications.
