Q: What is CMS Directed In-Service Training?
A: CMS Directed In-Service Training (DIT) is a regulatory enforcement remedy used when surveyors identify serious or systemic noncompliance in a nursing facility. Rather than relying solely on corrective action plans, CMS or the State Survey Agency requires the facility to provide targeted, mandatory education to staff to address identified deficiencies and prevent recurrence. DIT is typically imposed when deficiencies reflect inadequate staff knowledge, competency, or implementation of required practices—such as infection control failures, abuse prevention lapses, resident rights violations, or clinical care concerns. It may be ordered following a standard survey, complaint investigation, or revisit.
Training is provided by a qualified third-party trainer selected/approved by CMS or the State Survey Agency. The facility is responsible for coordinating the training and covering associated costs. DIT is mandatory and time-limited. Facilities must ensure required staff attend and must provide documentation of completion to avoid further enforcement actions.
